What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a dental restoration used to replace one or more missing teeth by “bridging” the gap between two adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. It consists of one or more artificial teeth, called pontics, which are anchored in place by crowns or abutments attached to the teeth or implants on either side of the gap. The natural teeth or implants that serve as the support for the bridge are known as abutment teeth.

Dental bridges are commonly used to:

Replace Missing Teeth: Dental bridges are an effective way to fill the space left by one or more missing teeth. They restore your ability to chew and speak properly, prevent adjacent teeth from shifting out of position, and improve the aesthetics of your smile.

Provide Support: Bridges rely on the support of adjacent natural teeth or dental implants to stay in place. These abutment teeth or implants are prepared and capped with crowns to serve as stable anchors for the bridge.

Enhance Aesthetics: Bridges are designed to look like natural teeth, providing a seamless and attractive appearance. They can be made from various materials, such as porcelain, ceramic, or metal alloys, to match the color and texture of your natural teeth.

Restore Function: With a bridge in place, you can regain the ability to bite and chew more effectively, which can improve your overall oral function and nutrition.

Types of Dental Bridges:

Traditional Bridge: This is the most common type of bridge and involves placing crowns on the abutment teeth on either side of the gap and attaching the pontic(s) in between.

Cantilever Bridge: This type of bridge is used when there is only one adjacent tooth or implant to support the pontic. It is less common than the traditional bridge and typically used in specific situations.

Maryland Bridge (Resin-Bonded Bridge): This bridge consists of a pontic and metal or porcelain wings on the backside of the adjacent teeth. It is bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth and is a conservative option that doesn’t require the preparation of the adjacent teeth.

Implant-Supported Bridge: Instead of relying on natural teeth for support, this type of bridge is anchored to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone. It is a highly stable and long-lasting option.

The choice of bridge type depends on various factors, including the location of the missing teeth, the condition of the abutment teeth, and your individual preferences.

ARAK CLINIC will evaluate your oral health, discuss your options, and recommend the most appropriate type of bridge for your specific needs.

Dental bridges can be an effective solution for replacing missing teeth and restoring both the function and appearance of your smile. Proper care and maintenance, including regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene, are essential to ensure the longevity of a dental bridge
